In a major breakthrough in garment manufacturing, the technology startup company in the United States announced that it had achieved its long-sought goal of sewing. The company has achieved milestones when using an industrial robot to sew a t-shirt. The first time a robot was used to sew a complete garment.
Although widely used in many other industries, automation has been unsuccessful in finding a place in garment manufacturing because robots are not capable of handling soft fabrics. The startup company Sewbo avoids these barriers by stiffening the fabric temporarily, making the traditional robot easy to sew as it is made from sheet metal. Then, the process is reversed to create the finished garment that has been completely sewn.
Says Jonathan Zornow, the technology innovator. "Our technology will allow manufacturers to create high quality, low cost garments that are less time consuming than ever. Avoiding labor problems and shortening supply chains will help reduce the complexity and many of the headaches around today's global supply network. And digital production will change the fashion completely, even down the way we buy clothes by allowing the production to meet customer requirements more easily and guaranteed to pay for everyone. "
Sewbo made the feat using the industrial robots they taught to run home sewing machines. After successfully defining its core concept, Sewbo is expanding its research team and moving towards commercialization.
